Based on the same libretto as Handel’s Tamerlano, Vivaldi’s Bajazet (1735) dramatises the clash of wills between the defiant sultan Bajazet and the Tartar conqueror Tamerlane. Though partly a pasticcio, in that it includes several crowd-pleasing arias by Vivaldi’s Neapolitan rivals, Bajazet in performance is one of Vivaldi’s most successful operas, a work of astounding musical richness and psychological insight. Researched and directed by Fabio Biondi, this dramatic premiere recording boasts the perfect cast to tackle the formidable challenges of the score, led by the young baritone Ildebrando D’Arcangelo as the tragic Bajazet and Marijana Mijanovic in the scorching role of his daughter Asteria. The set includes a free 30-minute DVD of live footage from the recording sessions, featuring each of the six soloists in a complete aria.Fabio Biondi violin, direction

For their second collection of Vivaldi’s sacred vocal music, Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante are joined by the outstanding Italian soprano Patrizia Ciofi in three colourful motets and a large-scale setting of Psalm 112, Laudate pueri Dominum. The motets follow a specific pattern, with two arias, differing in mood and style, separated by a short recitative and completed by a fast, exultant Alleluia, demanding a brilliant and technically assured soloist; here RV 626, in particular, has an expressive power that recalls Vivald’s finest operatic music. The vigorous early setting of Laudate pueri was probably written for one of Vivaldi’s talented young pupils at the Ospedale della Pietà.Fabio Biondi violin, direction
