“The score is remarkably effective…it’s well served here. Biondi conducting combines dramatic momentum with great refinement and a deep awareness of the opera’s ambiguities of mood. The orchestral sound is lean and clear, and there’s some terrific playing and coral singing. It’s a lovely performance and a real treat.”

EDITOR’S NOTES
Flis (the boatman) is the second piece of its kind – after Halka – to enter the Moniuszko collection of the Chopin Institute. Unjustly neglected, there is not the slightest doubt that this work deserves our attention. The Raftsman is essentially a fascinating genre scene painted in music.Beautifully melodious, colorful, distinctive, at the same time extremely rich and full of simplicity, it draws the best from the national tradition and culture of which Moniuszko was one of the most sincere chroniclers.
